Dear friends:

Tropical Storm Barry is heading for Louisiana, and there’s a strong possibility that it will turn into a hurricane.  I’m praying that the storm will pass us by, but I’m preparing for the worst.  Now is the time to make sure you are hurricane-ready.  If your area is under mandatory evacuation, please leave and find somewhere safe to ride out the storm.  Bring your pets with you.  Don’t leave them behind.  Make sure you have bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, a radio, gas in your car, refills of necessary medication and an evacuation strategy.

Louisianans are no strangers to storms, and I know we’ll pull through.  Please do what you can now to protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and your pets.

Preparing for Tropical Storm Barry

Pack an emergency preparedness kit.  This should include food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit.  Also, make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas.  Click here to view FEMA’s recommended list of supplies.

Review your evacuation zones.  If you are advised to evacuate, please do so immediately.  Even if you are not in an evacuation zone, plan ahead and have a route ready in case you need to evacuate.  Click here to find the latest news on evacuations and important information regarding evacuation routes.

Avoid floodwaters. Strong currents can carry people and small vehicles away.  Floodwaters can contain chemicals and waste that can cause lethal illnesses.

Stay informed.  Tune in to your local television and radio stations to stay up to date on the latest developments.  Follow the National Weather Service on Twitter to receive updates on the storm: @NWSNewOrleans
